2 Day Climbing Holiday in the Peaks

The Peak District is one of the best places to go climbing in the UK. The area boasts a lifetime’s worth of climbing so you will never stop wanting to explore. If you are a beginner or an expert, there will always be new and exciting routes for you to take on.

For these two, adventure filled days, we base ourselves in the quaint little town of Hathersage which has easy access to some of the Peaks finest crags and has a number of great climbing shops, as well as cafes and pubs to relax in after an awesome day of climbing.

About the Peak District

The Peak District became the first National Park in the UK in 1951. It is one of the most visited parks as it has close proximity to Sheffield, Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent and Derby. Much of the UK’s climbing and mountaineering history can be found in the Peak District because of its famous gritstone crags, burbage, forgatt and the world famous stanage edge.

Rock Type

The Peaks are home to two very different types of rock known as Dark Peak and Light Peak.

The Dark Peaks are made of Gritstone with its rounded edges, natural horizontal breaks and exceptional friction.

The Light Peaks (sometimes known as Low Peak) are made of Limestone which typically has smaller, sharper edged holds and the crags generally have steeper faces.

Itinerary

First Night

Depending on what time everyone arrives at the accommodation, we usually meet in a local pub to chew the fat over a pint. After all this is what climbing holidays are all about.

Day 1

We'll enjoy breakfast at our accommodation and chat about the days climbing ahead (this gives us a chance to make plans based on the weather forecast). Then it's off to the rocks where your climbing instructors will set up all the ropes, leaving you to concentrate fully on your climbing. It's your holiday so you can climb as much or as little as you want.

After the day of climbing, it’s time to relax and enjoy dinner and a pint at the pub and reflect on the day, and no doubt have a few laughs as well.

Day 2

To keep your climbing holiday interesting, our instructors will always aim to take you to a different crag for your second day. We will be able to set personal goals and coach you from what they saw the day before. On this day there is also the option of our instructors setting up an abseil for those that wish.

Before everyone heads home and encounters some major holiday blues, our instructors can offer advice and recommendations for your next steps on your climbing journey.

Equipment needed

For all outdoor climbing courses you must have extra warm clothes and waterproofs, we will provide you with a full kit list upon booking.

  • Comfortable clothing, suitable for the time of year*
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Approach shoes / trainers**
  • Climbing shoes
  • Harness
  • Rucksack (approx. 30-40ltr)
  • Packed lunch and plenty of water
  • Medication / Tablets / Inhaler etc.

The above list is just a guide and appropriate clothing for the time of year should be worn.

*Clothing should comprise of several layers to trap the warmth. Please do not wear denim as it restricts movement, is cold when wet and is slow to dry.

**For the walk-ins we’d recommend sturdy approach shoes or trainers with a substantial tread should be worn. Walking boots can be a good option but if we’re attempting long routes and climbing with kit they’ll be very heavy to carry.

Please remember the crags can be a fair walk or scramble from the car park, so it's important to put all of your kit in a suitable size rucksack leaving space for climbing equipment.

Take a look at our online shop for any equipment you might want for your outdoor adventures. We stock a variety of equipment and can give expert advice if you have any queries. Choose to collect your order on a course (free of charge) and your instructor will have it ready and waiting for you when you arrive.
