If you're into hiking, you may have heard whispers of the more challenging discipline that is scrambling. Think of it as that moment when you have to take your hands out of your pockets to get yourself up a bit of rock. Similarly to hill walking, the goal is to get yourself to the top of a peak. But you’re unlikely to find any signs marking the route to the top. In many ways, scrambling lies somewhere between hiking, hillwalking, mountaineering, and rock climbing.
Unlike other mountain disciplines with their endless kit lists, all you’ll need to start scrambling is a pair of walking boots and a good head for heights. Which does not mean it’s in any way less challenging or for the faint-hearted.
What are the different grades in scrambling?
Scrambling comes with its own grading system, from grade 1 to grade 3, that helps us know what a particular route will be like and how difficult the scramble will be. Our experienced instructors will always start you on the easiest grade and work your way up, if you feel that way "inclined" (dad joke alert).
Grade 1
On a grade 1 scramble, you’ll need to use your hands but you’ll never be on vertical terrain. It's more more like an exposed walking route and is relatively straightforward. This is where we'll start any of our trips to get you warmed up.
Grade 2
The line between scrambling and rock climbing becomes a lot more blurred on a grade 2 route and the use of protection becomes more advisable. At a certain point in the scramble, you may be required to do a short rock climb to overcome a particular obstacle. This is where the fun starts!
Grade 3
This grade is a more serious route and should only be undertaken by experienced scramblers. Grade 3 routes often appear in climbing guides as ‘moderately’ graded climbing routes (the easiest climbing grade). We'll only share this kind of route with you if we're confident you have the skills to tackle it.
