Job Description

Full-time Retail Assistant Manager to work in our Brighton Marina shop. You’ll be joining a small team and you will often be required to work on your own or manage junior staff.

You will be responsible for a wide range of tasks from on-line sales, taking bookings for our courses and adventures, advising customers on equipment in store and making a cracking coffee for them. It is essential that you have excellent administration and communication skills as you will also be building relationships with our industry and corporate clients.

Although this position is based in our shop 50% of our sales are currently on-line so you must have excellent computer skills.

Working within a small team you will need to be multi-skilled, adaptable and able to turn you hand to assist with all aspects of the business.

The role is fun yet demanding, you will be managing your time and working to multiple deadlines to ensure our clients have the best experience right from the start. You will also be given the opportunity to take ownership of various projects, so a creative mind is also a distinct advantage.

You must have a passion for the outdoor environment and our green ethos.

Required Skills

  • Strong retail experience (ideally with both on-line and in store experience).
  • Excellent office administration and management skills.
  • Skilled in computers (ideally Macs) / internet / emails / word / excel.
  • Excellent communication skills, dealing with customers / corporate clients / booking agents / complaints (not that we get many of these).
  • Skilled in dealing with customers / charities / corporate clients / booking agents.
  • Supporting the Director and Operations Manager administratively.
  • Experience in managing junior staff.

Additional Roles

  • Assist with coordinating / rotas staff and instructors.
  • Assist with writing our monthly newsletters.
  • Assist with marketing products / courses / events.
  • Assist with social media campaigns.
  • Assist with the development of new areas of the business; products / charity events / corporate events / trips away / schools groups / overseas trips.

Distinct Advantage

  • Climbing and Kayaking background (must have experience in at least one of these).
  • Shop management / marketing experience.
  • Experience maintaining social media platforms and engaging with the public.
  • Creative writing (newsletters / blogs / web content).
  • Instructional qualifications in the sports we offer.

As well as staff discounts on equipment, you will be able to attend all of our courses free of charge or at cost price including; rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking, navigation, mountaineering, first aid. You will also have the opportunity of gaining instructor qualifications should you wish. We will also help with any third-party job specific training where relevant to your work.

Holiday

28 days per year.

Pay

£24-26,000 per annum depending on previous experience. Pay is reviewed yearly depending on performance and growth of the business.

Hours

40hrs (5 days) per week (normally 9-6pm) with 1hr for lunch. We are open 7 days per week so weekend work will be required. You will also act as ‘duty manager’ (an emergency contact) where the Operations Manager is unable to fill this role.
